Nanping Evening Bell (南屏晚钟)

In the 2016 singing competition “The Next S1” EP10,
Hua Chenyu adapted and sang a classic Chinese song “Nanping Evening Bell (南屏晚钟)”, with semi-finalist Juno Su.

1. About the song

“The Next” (also known as “Sound of War”) is a singing competition/show where anyone can challenge mature singers. The song the challenger chose for the singer warrior will then be revealed, and the singer warrior must compete with their challenger by singing the chosen song. The singer warriors have 24 hours to rearrange to chosen songs, and after 24 hours, they will face their challengers on the stage with 400 audiences who would cast their votes to decide the winner.

In the second half of the competition, each of the surviving challengers form a combination with a singer, and compete against other teams by performing together.

“Nanping Evening Bell” is a classic old song released in 1958 and has been covered by many singers. This time, Hua Chenyu collaborated with amateur female singer Juno Su, who entered the semifinals, to sing this song.

Taking into account the characteristics of the two singers, Hua Chenyu made a subversive adaptation of the song. In the second half of the song, Hua climbed onto the piano, and after finishing a rap, he immediately sang two 16-second high-pitched choruses.
